This wood carving of a Fir Tree wall hanging carved in Buckeye would make a special wood sculpture gift. My tree carvings are carved from a single piece of wood. These smaller tree carvings make wonderful gifts for so many occasions!! I don't carve them as often as I used to. My hands are only interested in doing them occasionally. I am retired now. I will be carving for as long as I can. I still love doing it more than anything!! This piece measures 18 1/2" tall x 10 1/4 wide x 1 1/8" thick. These trees have so much character!! It's hard to get a picture that really shows what these carvings look like in person. Please look at my feedback to see what customers have said about my work.

I carved it out of a piece of Buckeye that has a great color. The colors in this wood are so warm. It is a very rare wood. It grows in the foothills of the Sierra's in California. It also grows in the Eastern US but this Buckeye is a little bit more like a small bushy tree rather than a large trunked tree like in the East. It is a tricky tree to harvest because of the clay soil it grows in. When the soil is dry, it is harder than the wood. When the soil is wet, it is too slippery for the back hoe to get in and dig it out. The cost of the wood adds a lot to the price of the carving. It is a root burl so there aren't a lot of solid pieces as the burl is mixed in with the roots and grows right around rocks and dirt pockets. It can make it tricky to work sometimes if there is a rock inside when you go to mill it or start working it. It is very challenging but really worth the extra effort. I feel very blessed to have a few pieces of Buckeye to work with.

The technique I use is called Pierced Relief. It is carved out of one piece of wood and nothing is added. I have been carving since 1971 and a tree was the first carving I did. I have always been stimulated to carve a resemblance of a tree out of a tree. My technique has evolved over all of these years to what you see here. I keep seeing ways to make things more life like. And I love a piece to look like it is in the middle of a story that each observer can make up. Sometimes a different story each time we look at it and sometimes the same one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Care instructions

All of my carvings have a lacquer finish. Dusting with a feather duster or blowing off with a compressor is all that is necessary on the carved trees, fish and carved faces. I use Orange oil on the smooth surfaces. This will perk them up. I would do it as often as you polish your furniture. Once a month would keep them looking great but is not necessary.

When will I get my purchased carving?

I will contact you as soon as I get your order. I will package it that day or the next. I take it to the Post Office the next morning. If I get an order on Friday afternoon, Saturday or Sunday it will be in Monday mornings mail.

How will my carving be shipped?

I use Priority United States postal service mail.

Do you ship outside of the US?

I do ship outside of the US. I need to know the carving that you are interested in and your complete shipping address. I will figure what it costs to ship to your address and make the changes to the listing so that you can make the purchase.
