Some pieces of wood seem to carry their history with them.
This one-of-a-kind Myrtlewood heart was carved from an extremely weathered and heavily spalted piece of wood to be the perfect 5th Wood Anniversary gift idea. Rather than removing its scars, openings and natural edges, I worked with them and allowed them to become part of the finished heart. This would make a great wood Anniversary gift for a married couple.
The large natural opening near the center is my favorite feature. Dark, rugged areas of the original wood surround the opening and contrast with the warm golden-brown Myrtlewood grain. There are cracks, voids, bark-like textures and naturally darkened areas throughout the piece — all part of the character of the original wood.
To me, this heart can represent the difficult periods we pass through in life. A heart can be marked by experience and still become something beautiful. Sometimes those experiences are what give us greater understanding and compassion for the journeys of others.

I began carving full time in 1978, and after all these years I still enjoy discovering what is hidden inside each unusual piece of wood. I rarely know exactly what a carving will become when I begin. I follow the grain, natural edges, knots, voids and character of the wood and allow the form to evolve as I work.
The photos include the original piece of Myrtlewood and several stages of the carving process so you can see the transformation. I’ve also included close-ups, different viewing angles and a short video to give a better sense of its depth and texture.
I normally package an order the day it is received or the following day and ship as quickly as possible. I message the buyer with the tracking information as soon as I create the shipping label.

All of my carvings have a lacquer finish. Dusting with a feather duster or blowing off with a compressor is all that is necessary on the carved trees, fish and carved faces. I use Orange oil on the smooth surfaces. This will perk them up. I would do it as often as you polish your furniture. Once a month would keep them looking great but is not necessary.
I will contact you as soon as I get your order. I will package it that day or the next. I take it to the Post Office the next morning. If I get an order on Friday afternoon, Saturday or Sunday it will be in Monday mornings mail.
I use Priority United States postal service mail.
I do ship outside of the US. I need to know the carving that you are interested in and your complete shipping address. I will figure what it costs to ship to your address and make the changes to the listing so that you can make the purchase.
