Hand-carved red Myrtlewood burl heart – one of a kind
This large Myrtlewood heart was individually carved by me in my workshop at the Tree Wizard Gallery in Port Orford, Oregon.
It measures approximately 21 1/2" tall x 14" wide x 2 1/2" thick.
I dyed the Myrtlewood a rich translucent red rather than covering it with an opaque color. The result is what I especially like about this piece—the burl figure, tiny eyes, waves and changes in the grain remain visible beneath the red and seem to shift as the light moves across the carving.
The upper right lobe retains a wonderful section of the wood's natural edge, along with a small natural inclusion nearer the center. I intentionally kept these features rather than removing them. They are part of the history of the tree and make this heart something that could never be duplicated.
The carving has a smooth, flowing form that narrows into a long point. The contrast between that graceful shape and the rustic natural areas gives this heart a character of its own.

Because this is real wood rather than a manufactured material, the grain, natural inclusions and irregularities are part of the artwork rather than defects.
I have included close-up photographs and views from different angles so you can see the burl figure and natural areas clearly. There is also a short video because this piece changes considerably as light moves across the surface.
Shipping is included in the price.
When a heart is purchased, I send the buyer a personal message acknowledging the order. I generally package my carvings the same day and take them to the post office the following day whenever possible. When I create the shipping label, I send the buyer the tracking information.
Each heart I carve is individually shaped from the piece of wood in front of me rather than made from a fixed pattern. No two are ever quite alike.

Frequently Asked Questions

Care instructions

All of my carvings have a lacquer finish. Dusting with a feather duster or blowing off with a compressor is all that is necessary on the carved trees, fish and carved faces. I use Orange oil on the smooth surfaces. This will perk them up. I would do it as often as you polish your furniture. Once a month would keep them looking great but is not necessary.

When will I get my purchased carving?

I will contact you as soon as I get your order. I will package it that day or the next. I take it to the Post Office the next morning. If I get an order on Friday afternoon, Saturday or Sunday it will be in Monday mornings mail.

How will my carving be shipped?

I use Priority United States postal service mail.

Do you ship outside of the US?

I do ship outside of the US. I need to know the carving that you are interested in and your complete shipping address. I will figure what it costs to ship to your address and make the changes to the listing so that you can make the purchase.
